Councils Cut Cost of Pass Plus Lessons By Up to 50%… while Adrian Flux lessens post-Pass Plus insurance costs by up to 30%
Latest figures show that Pass Plus – the additional driving course aimed at those who’ve just passed their driving test – is now being supported by over thirty town, district and county councils throughout the UK. Many of these councils are offering discounts of up to 50% on the cost of tuition, in a bid to promote responsible driving.
And because young drivers with Pass Plus are considered safer risks, Adrian Flux Insurance Services can offer them up to 30% discount on car insurance – which in many cases is the equivalent of a full year’s no-claims bonus.
"Our figures demonstrate that up to one in five newly qualified drivers will have an accident within their first year," said Gerry Bucke of Adrian Flux. "But if they’ve taken the Pass Plus course, they are statistically much less likely to make a claim, and we can reduce the premium to match."
Designed by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), the Pass Plus course was created with the support of insurers such as Adrian Flux and the driving instruction industry. It takes young drivers beyond basic driving skills and teaches them how to anticipate – and deal with – all kinds of hazards on the roads. Pass Plus helps them become more confident and safer drivers.
Drivers can start a Pass Plus course immediately they’ve passed their basic driving test, and it’s available throughout Great Britain. (A list of councils that contribute to the cost of taking the course is available at www.passplus.org.uk/sponsors.asp.)
Young drivers usually have a tough time insuring their car – even a car in one of the lower insurance brackets – and having Pass Plus will make a big difference to their premium.
For example, a 20 year old male driving a 1200cc Vauxhall Corsa might expect to pay around £950 for his insurance on TPF&T (depending on address). If he takes Pass Plus then Flux could cut it to £670.
Similarly, an 18 year old female owning a small 1.1 litre Fiat Panda and paying £915 for TPF&T cover would see her insurance drop to about £640 with Flux, again after achieving Pass Plus.
