The Royal Air Force Typhoon Rally Team clinched the Class title in the BTRDA National Asphalt Rally Championship at the Keith Knox Stages in Northumberland on 25th October, 2009. The team, based at RAF Marham in Norfolk, have had to battle extra hard to secure the title due to missing early rounds through tours of operational duty.
Adrian Flux Insurance Services is among local sponsors who have ensured that the team can keep racing at this level. Although the main running costs of the car are shared between the team themselves, outside sponsors are vital.
The Typhoon team of RAF engineers consists of Sgt Chris Daykin, Sqn Sgt Pete Taylor, SAC Dan Meginnity, SAC Pete Gwilliam and SAC Michelle Andrews. Their everyday job of keeping the RAF’s Tornado GR4 jets in tip-top condition has proved excellent training to ensure that theTyphoon car is tuned up to meet the tough challenges of each national rally stage.
“Being able to approach a local company like Flux with a national profile is a real bonus,” says Sgt Chris Daykin. “Not only have they sponsored us but they sorted our insurance as well. We found having to insure the rally car was a daunting process. However Flux came to the rescue, made it simple and ensured we got the right cover required to drive on public roads between events.”
Flux has built its reputation on finding insurance cover for niche market motors and for those that other companies don’t want to touch. The company’s headquarters, East Winch Hall, is only ten miles from RAF Marham and Flux keeps close links with the team and other fundraising activities at the base.
“We like to be involved with local community projects,” says Gerry Bucke of Flux. “This one was of especial interest to us as it was motoring. Many companies fight shy of insuring rally cars but we are used to finding cover for modified and high performance cars, so it wasn’t a problem.”
The Marham-based team also took home the ‘John Horton Star Performance’ award. This was won by Sgt Daykin, who drove the final 30 miles at speeds of up to 110mph in failing light and torrential rain without lights, windscreen wipers or a demisting fan after the car developed an electrical fault.
Adrian Flux aims to offer cheaper car insurance and has a huge range of policies for the motoring enthusiast. For details contact the Adrian Flux quote line on 0800 081 8989, email the company at quotes@adrianflux.co.uk or see the Flux homepage on www.adrianflux.co.uk
