Aldborough’s high achievers put on a show with swagger!
A North Norfolk primary school celebrated its outstanding Sats results in a dramatic way – by putting on a theatrical presentation featuring rats, monkeys, sailors and pirates… Aldborough School’s summer production, The Pirates of the Curry Bean, featured a treasure quest but, as head teacher Mrs Helen Bearman says, the children had already dug deep and come up trumps!
Aldborough’s results were certainly dramatic – the children achieved an average score of 85.7%, against the national average of just 61%. Mrs Bearman says, “We are so proud of our Year 6 children for the progress that they have made throughout their time at Aldborough. Maths has been our focus this year so we were particularly delighted to achieve an 85.7% pass rate, well above the national average of 73%. The children all worked so hard – but they still managed to find time to enjoy themselves, and The Pirates of the Curry Bean is the icing on the cake!”
Amongst the thespians strutting on stage was Stanely Stickells, who played Admiral Horatio Hornhonker. “I love being the silly character who knows nothing but is in charge,” he said. His nemesis, Captain Cod, was played by Hazel Riches. She said, “The play is hilarious and I love the singing – especially my solo, because it’s such a funny song!”
Mrs Bearman said, “It’s wonderful to see how the children, having risen to the challenge of their Sats, rose to this very different challenge by not only learning all their lines and songs, but also really getting their characters across through their acting. Special mentions go to our Year 6 teacher, Mr John Hall Galley, who also directed the play, and his teaching assistant, Mrs Kirsty Oleary, who put together the fabulous costumes and props.”
