Essential summer BBQ gear: now everyone can go Kamado

Big black Kamado ceramic grill barbecue from Monolith combines high quality with low pricing

The Big Black Kamado ceramic grill from MonolithCeramic grills, or Kamados, are becoming increasingly popular with barbecue aficionados. Based on a traditional Japanese design, versions of these grills have been discovered by archaeologists in early cultures all around the world. Similar to Indian tandoor ovens or the Japanese mushikamado from which it takes its name, the ceramic walls give the Kamado excellent heat retention properties. This means it can cook meat perfectly, retaining tenderness and succulence while the high heat and precise control of the airflow simultaneously allows for crisping and browning of the skin.

It can also be used as a smoker, or for baking bread or pizza. Made with high quality ceramic and stainless steel, the modern Kamado combines exceptional cooking results, flexibility and great looks.

Until recently, the only drawback has been cost. Now Monolith Grill UK has launched a lower cost alternative, which combines German design with traditionally manufactured, superior Chinese ceramics.

According to the Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association in the US, barbecue has overtaken going out for a meal as a popular dining option. In the UK, as the market grows more people are looking for barbecue grills that can provide high quality results – the traditional blackened banger is no longer acceptable to the Masterchef generation! It’s time for barbecue lovers to go Kamado.

Like all the best Kamado grills, the Monolith version is egg-shaped, with a flattened bottom.  It’s available in either the brand’s signature black colour or bright red. Using charcoal as the heat source, it comes in a choice of three sizes and with a wide range of accessories.  Destined to become essential for summer cooking, it’s also the ideal all-year barbecue for direct grilling, indirect grilling, baking, drying and smoking.

“The pricing of the Monolith range is so competitive that we really expect it will be a huge hit,” says Mike Joslin, director of Monolith Grill UK. “It will appeal to everyone who loves barbecues, and especially those who had previously considered a ceramic Kamado, but were put off by the cost.”

For example, the mid-range ‘Classic’ Monolith, supplied in black with stand and side shelves, has a list price of £800 including VAT – which is £150 to £200 less than other Kamado brands with the same build quality.  The Classic has a grill diameter of 46cm.
