“I was amazed … everything came out dry … they don’t need wiping”
At the South London base of catering equipment rental company Jones Hire, a new water purification system is now playing a key role in meeting the holy grail of warewashing – polishing-free glasses.
The RoMatik reverse osmosis system from Winterhalter is delivering pure water to help ensure perfectly washed, perfectly dry glassware and plates, emerging from the machine ready to stack or box up – with no need for polishing.
Jones Hire supplies tableware to many of the most prestigious events in the UK. Contract caterers hire their equipment for royal banquets, showbiz bashes, diplomatic receptions and every other kind of quality function. Everything has to be perfect when it goes out.
The company’s quality control is very demanding and its choice of tableware includes high-quality designer items that look superb but can be delicate, particularly when decorated.
So when Tim Edwards, general manager at Jones Hire, upgraded his warewashing he naturally chose RoMatik.
Working by reverse osmosis, RoMatik is capable of delivering up to 300 litres of pure water per hour to the final rinse. Unlike other reverse osmosis systems, which require pre-softeners, the RoMatik accepts mains water directly and removes up to 96% of all dissolved mineral salts present in the hard London water. RoMatik also prevents limescale build-up, thus reducing service expenses and prolonging working life. Plus, it offers significant savings in detergent and rinse-aid costs.
The biggest difference RoMatik has made for Jones Hire is in the final rinse for the glassware. Says Tim Edwards “We can put a dirty glass in at one end, and it comes out perfectly clean and shiny-dry at the other end. We’ve never seen that in glass washing before. And it does it for all our glasses, including all the delicate designer ware.”
The labour-saving alone is tremendous. Before Romatik was installed up to six people were involved in wiping and polishing on each machine and it not only cost money; it took up extra time as well. In addition, the company spent large amounts on laundry for the tea towels and polishing cloths.
“‘Revolutionary’ isn’t an exaggeration,” Tim Edwards says. The money saved will pay for the new warewash system in a year, he believes, and RoMatik is a crucial part of the system.
