Lots of car clubs have vans to transport gear and people to events. But many of them are paying over the odds for their van insurance, according to Adrian Flux Insurance Services.
The Flux Clubs Team works closely with car clubs, sorting special deals and discounts for members. "We had several clubs grumbling about the cost of their van insurance – they felt it was a rip-off," says Craig Darwin, Flux’s club liaison manager. "So we looked into it ourselves and came up with a scheme that cuts the costs dramatically, in just about every case."
Insuring a van for a club is not straightforward. Not only because of what the van is used for – driving to and from club events means it requires business cover – but also because the club will probably need to insure several drivers. An additional complication is that the van is often owned by, and registered to, the club itself.
Luckily Flux’s commercial division specialises in van insurance and was able to pull together a scheme that answers the special needs of car clubs – and find ways to reduce the cost. "For example, we took account of the fact that a club’s van doesn’t get used all the time, so it’s less of a risk than a vehicle that’s being used for business all week long. Which means the premium can be lower," explains Craig Darwin.
Car and bike clubs can also lower their premium by having a higher excess for claims. "Most clubs are happy to consider this, on the basis that they can carry out many repairs on the van for themselves anyway."
The Flux Clubs Team is now helping several car clubs with their van insurance. "In one case we were able to cut the premium from £770 to £450, for a VW van with comprehensive cover for any authorised driver over 25," adds Craig Darwin.
